French newspaper Le Monde has described Guo Wenjing's compositions as pieces of "unparalleled musical beauty and dramatic power". A Chinese composer of international renown, Guo's pride in his nation's musical heritage is illustrated by his use of traditional Chinese instruments alongside western ones, as in this special commissioned work for the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra. Aaron Copland also showed the powerful pull of his homeland by basing themes in his Third Symphony on old American folk melodies, while French composer Henri Dutilleux celebrated the history of western music as a whole in a work that was five years in the making and an ingenious experiment on traditional musical forms.
