Top ethnic musicians team up in an astonishing musical encounter resonating in ethereal oriental power
Iconic singer Zhu Zheqin, who is also known as Dadawa, is one of the few Chinese singers to have established a place in the international contemporary music spotlight. Her phenomenal 1995 album Sister Drum was the first contemporary Chinese album to receive an international release, fascinating world music fans in over 50 countries and achieving impressive sales of three million discs. Indeed, her rapturous voice along with a dynamic musical style combining East and West as well as ethnic sounds, have set a new direction for contemporary music.
In 2009, the singer was appointed a National Goodwill Ambassador for China by the United Nations Development Programme, which aims to preserve ethnic minority cultures. She has since covered 20,000 km on her musical exploration tour, gathering songs and music from areas as diverse as Inner Mongolia, Xinjiang, Tibet, Yunnan and Guizhou. Her research has produced fresh insights on how traditional cultural forms can be revitalised for today's world and for the future.
Taking inspiration from her experiences in China and around the world, this concert finds Dadawa's ethereal voice weaving a tantalising soundscape from Chinese, western and traditional instruments in collaboration with ethnic and contemporary musicians. Samplings collected from her expeditions are rearranged with electronic music, live instrumentation and vocals. Inventive stage design and amazing audio-visual effects add to the dynamic multi-media presentation, carrying audience members on a spell-binding journey across the Himalayas and other ethnic regions to experience the diverse cultures of China.
